A Curious Tale of the In-Between by Lauren DeStefano starts off with one of the best lines ever: "Pram died just before she was born" (1). Really, how does one die before being born? Immediately, I reread it to be sure I understood what I just read. There was no choice but to read on and find out how this is even possible. This story of a girl who sees and communicates with ghosts reminds me of the television show Ghost Whisperer (CBS). Pram might live with ghosts, but it isn't ghosts she needs to fear. It is people. Anyone who likes Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will love this book. If you are a mystery lover, you will devour it.
If you like historical fiction, read Kathy Cannon Weichman's adventurous book Like a River. A young boy living in his brother's shadow tries to prove he is a man by joining the Union Army. What started out to be an attempt to earn his father's respect, ends up nearly costing Leander his life. Leander and his friend Paul try to watch out for each other, but the evils of war are too much. Discover what happens when friends harbor secrets that put their lives in peril. One thing is for sure. War changes a person -- maybe too much to go back home.
